Texas drivers ed FAQ

Common questions about Texas online driver education

Can I take driver education online in Texas?

Yes. Texas recognizes online driver education as one of the available driver-education options. The course path and licensing steps depend on your age and whether you are using a teen, adult, or parent-taught program.

How old can a teen be to start Texas driver education?

A student may begin the classroom portion at age 14. A Texas learner license is not available until at least age 15 and the required classroom milestone has been completed.

Who needs the Texas 6-hour adult driver education course?

Texas generally requires first-time driver-license applicants ages 18 through 24 to complete a six-hour adult driver education course. Drivers age 25 and older are not required by Texas to take driver education, although they may still choose to take a course for preparation.

What is the difference between teen and parent-taught driver education?

Both paths include required classroom education. In a parent-taught program, an eligible parent or other approved adult serves as the driving instructor and follows the Parent-Taught Driver Education requirements. In a regular teen course, the behind-the-wheel portion is completed separately through the appropriate Texas driver-education path.

Does online course completion replace the Texas driving test?

No. Completing driver education does not by itself issue a Texas driver license. Students must still complete the licensing steps that apply to their age and course path, including any required learner-license, behind-the-wheel, Impact Texas Drivers, and driving-test requirements.

Can I take a driving course online for teens in Texas?

Yes. Texas teen driver education can include an online classroom course. ABC offers the online classroom portion for eligible teen students and tracks the course milestones that apply before later licensing steps.

What is the 6-hour driving course online for adults in Texas?

The six-hour adult driver education course covers Texas traffic laws, road signs, defensive driving, hazards, and safe driving principles. It is the adult driver-education course used for many first-time Texas applicants ages 18 through 24.

Does ABC issue a Texas driver license or replace Texas DPS?

No. ABC provides online driver education. Texas DPS handles learner licenses and driver licenses. After completing the driver-education requirements that apply to you, follow the current Texas DPS licensing steps for your situation.
