Module 8: Special Driving Conditions

Covers rain, hydroplaning, fog, smoke, reduced visibility, strong wind, slippery roads, rural roads, nighttime weather, and other adverse conditions. Estimated Time: 95 Minutes

Lessons

Driving in Rain and Wet Conditions

This lesson teaches students how rain and wet roads affect traction, visibility, and stopping distance, and how to safely adjust driving behavior during wet weather conditions. LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: Understand how rain affects driving safety Recognize reduced traction dangers Adjust speed and following distance during wet weather Understand hydroplaning risks Practice defensive driving during rain

Hydroplaning and Loss of Traction Recovery

This lesson teaches students how hydroplaning happens, how loss of traction affects vehicle control, and how to respond safely when tires lose grip on wet roads. LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: Understand hydroplaning Recognize warning signs of traction loss Respond safely during hydroplaning Reduce hydroplaning risk Practice defensive driving in wet conditions

Driving in Fog, Smoke, and Reduced Visibility

This lesson teaches students how reduced visibility conditions affect driving, how to adjust speed safely, and how to respond when visibility becomes limited because of fog, smoke, dust, heavy rain, or similar conditions. LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: Understand reduced visibility dangers Adjust speed during fog and smoke conditions Use headlights properly Maintain safe following distance Practice defensive driving when visibility decreases

Driving During Strong Wind Conditions

This lesson teaches students how strong wind affects vehicle control, steering, lane position, large vehicles, and roadway hazards. Students learn defensive techniques for maintaining control and making safe decisions during windy driving conditions. LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson students should be able to: Understand how wind affects vehicles Recognize dangerous wind situations Maintain steering control during gusts Drive safely around trucks and open roads Apply defensive driving during high winds

Driving in Snow and Ice Conditions

This lesson introduces students to driving risks created by snow, ice, freezing temperatures, and reduced traction. Although snow is uncommon in many parts of Texas, drivers may travel to areas where winter conditions exist and should understand safe driving practices. LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson students should be able to: Understand how snow and ice affect traction Recognize dangerous winter road conditions Reduce risk during slippery driving Respond properly to skids Apply defensive driving techniques in winter weather

Rural Roads and Limited Visibility Driving

This lesson teaches students how rural roads differ from city streets, the hazards found outside urban areas, and how to drive safely when visibility is limited. LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson students should be able to: Understand hazards common on rural roads Recognize limited visibility situations Adjust speed for changing conditions Respond safely to animals and narrow roads Apply defensive driving techniques in rural environments

Night Weather Driving

This lesson teaches students how nighttime and poor weather together increase driving difficulty. Students learn how darkness, rain, fog, glare, and reduced visibility affect safe driving decisions. LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson students should be able to: Understand why night weather driving is difficult Recognize visibility problems Adjust speed and following distance Manage glare and light reflections Apply defensive driving techniques at night
